About Steeple Ashton Keevil Airfield

Keevil airfield was built during the Second World War on a site previously ear-marked for the purpose in the mid 1930's. Consisting of 3 long concrete runways the airfield was used by both the RAF and USAF mainly as a transport cum glider base. After the war the use of the airfield declined with the accommodation being used to house Polish Refugees in the 1950's. Today although there are no aircraft based on the airfield it still see active service as a drop zone and practice landing strip for the C130 Hercules from RAF Lyneham and C17's from RAF Brize Norton. Helicopters from the Army Air Squadrons are also regular visitors to the airfield. There are also various civilian users of the airfield from the Police to a circuit racing company.

In addition to these, occasional helicopter activity, supply drops and the deployment of small numbers of troops may occur at any time with little of no notice.
